About Us

Millets of Mewar, Udaipur’s first dedicated health food restaurant, opened in November 2011 and has since developed a regular and enthusiastic following. The restaurant is the shared vision of a group of like-minded friends—Surendra (Sunny) Gandharva, Anoop Singh Poonia, and Manoj and Nirmal Prajapat—who believe in the power of food to inspire good health, good conversation, and environmental consciousness. Just four months after opening, Millets of Mewar was ranked the #1 restaurant in Udaipur on Trip Advisor.

Manoj and Sunny, Millets’ master chefs, began experimenting with health food in 2007 after receiving training at the Health Awareness Centre in Mumbai. Back in their hometown of Udaipur, they started creating recipes that highlighted local grains, vegetables, and spices. Encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive response to their food, Manoj and Sunny started providing catering for events, attending food festivals, and running a food cart in the city twice a week.

In 2011, Manoj and Sunny met Anoop, an entrepreneur and founding member and president of the Indian Youth Climate Network. Around the same time, Manoj’s brother Nirmal, an artist, heard of an open space for rent in the busy centre of Udaipur. Manoj, Sunny, Nirmal, and Anoop were each looking for their next project, and thus Millets of Mewar was born.

These days, when they’re not expanding on the menu or discussing art and current events with customers and friends, the guys volunteer at various local and national organizations and periodically host cultural events, book swaps, workshops, and sometimes even a good old-fashioned dance party.

Our Ingredients
  • Natural Oils – We use small amounts of natural peanut, sesame, and coconut oils in our cooking. These oils contain enzymes that aid in the digestion of fatty acids & nutrients.
  • Healthy, Local, Gluten-free Grains – We use a variety of alternative, nutritious millets such as amaranth (rajgira/kangni), ragi, sorghum, barley, and hamo, which are local, high-fibre, and easy to digest.
  • Steamed and Raw Vegetables – Our menu is filled with lightly steamed and raw dishes. By minimizing the amount of treatment, processing, and cooking it goes through between the kitchen and the table, we can keep our food as alive and wholesome as possible.
  • Organic Products – We use 100% organic honey, jaggery (date sugar), coffee, and millets, and we purchase other organic produce and ingredients whenever possible.
  • Jaggery/Misri (Natural Sugars) – Our desserts are made using naturally sweet ingredients, such as dates, raisins, and fruits, and supplemented with unprocessed sweeteners such as gur (jaggery) and misri (crystalline sugar).
  • Vegan Alternatives – Our menu contains a variety of vegan options made with coconut, almond, and soy milk to accommodate dairy-free diets (and because they taste good).
