History
Begu Fort around 500 years ago existed as a fief from which the rulers of Mewar used to earn their revenues. It was given as a gift to Prince Chunda Ji, the crown prince of Mewar, in the year 1430. There was a time in history when Begu was constituted by over 500 revenue villages including 4 districts or paraganas. Some noblemen and royals spread its boundaries and form them as their own jagirs.

Rajgarh Palace near Begu
Lake Rajgarh along with a beautiful palace and a Shiv temple was built by Rawat Raj Singh ji in 1630 AD. It is situated 7 kms away from Fort Begu. Rajgarh Palace has a Shiv temple on one side and is situated in the lake connected to the land by a causeway. Along the embankment of the lake grows a 50 acre lush green orchard which was once a hunting reserve. During the winter season migratory birds and waterfowls throng the lake.
11th century Menal Temple complex near Begu
The ancient name is MAHA–NAL which means the "GREAT CHASM." Menal is a temple complex overlooking the gorge of Menali River situated about 20 kms away from Begu. It has a picturesque 120 feet water fall which is active from July to September and is a feast for the eyes. The lush green valley and the gorge afford a breathtaking view of the place. Situated on a plateau it is an ideal place for trekking, and horse and camel rides from Begu.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the entrance of the main temple is marked by huge gateways and a statue of Nandi Bull adorns the front. The walls of the temple are carved with images of Shiva and Parvati and also, there is some erotic art, similar to that found on the walls of the famous Khajuraho temples.
Dwarkadhish temple at the Fort
There are eight temples within the Fort of Begu. One of them is dedicated to Dwarkadhish - Lord Krishna. The deity is worshipped following the Vaishnav rituals formulated by the great saint Vallabhacharya. The main idol is at Kankroli near the holy town of Nathdwara. One such idol of Dwarkadhish was brought by Rawat Maha Singh ji II from Kankroli for worship to Begu and he placed it within the palace. The family of Begu has had the opportunity to patronize the shrine of Kankroli for many years.
